Why your vision might not be matching your balloon artists suggestions

These days everything seems to be called a 'balloon arch.' The term has become so abstract it's challenging to determine what a client wants without seeing at least one concept photo.

Formally trained balloon artists have one base shape that comes to mind when a client says, 'balloon arch.' We think of an arch as a complete arc, starting at one side and ending at the opposite side. On the other hand, a 'demi-arch' or 'swoop' or 'half arch' has only one complete side.

The form can be altered in both cases to meet the artistic demand. Maybe the arch is square instead of parabolic. Perhaps the demi-arch resembles more of half of a square vs. a cane shape.

Just like decorating a cake, once the basic form is defined, then comes the icing or, in the case of the balloon artist, the decor style.

Decor styles usually follow two paths; classic decor or organic decor . Again, the formally trained balloon artist will default to envision the 'classic decor' style as the 'organic decor' style is a relatively new trend. The classic and organic styles have many different patterns that may be applied depending on the client's vision, installation environment, and budget.

Some balloon artists will use a term known as ' faux ' organic, giving the illusion of a true organic style but costing less. Some classic decor patterns will mimic an organic balloon decor design too.

The other term that often comes into play is ' garland .' A balloon garland may or may not require a fixed frame. Balloon garlands are also of two types; classic or organic. Sometimes, using the existing architectural elements in the installation environment makes more sense than using a frame with heavy bases, such as with a balloon arch or demi-arch. One benefit is the client may opt to strike or remove the old balloon decor instead of paying the balloon artist to return to the venue and retrieve the framing material. Another benefit is to achieve a backdrop.

Visit a venue, and you might find a rack of business cards and brochures offering products and services to help with your event. Unfortunately, those business cards and advertisements may not be from legitimate companies.

Anyone can print a business card, and many are ‘testing’ the waters. Usually, these are the hobbyists hoping to discover a demand for their product or service before they risk investing in turning their hobby into a legitimate business. The unsuspecting manager at the venue may never ask them to prove their legitimacy.

What does this mean for you? First off, they will not have any liability insurance that places you at risk. Professional balloon decorators, for instance, use many types of frames. We often need to attach decor to ceilings or walls. Ensuring the safety of your guests and the integrity of the venue is very important, and we take it seriously. Buying from a hobbyist means you will be responsible for the liability of their work. Are you willing to take that chance?

Get the balloons you really want for your event

You're having an event! You've probably thought a lot about the food and the DJ, but what about the decorations? No doubt, professionally created balloon décor brings in an element of fun like no other type of decoration. When you look back at the pictures, that same sense of joy will come back again and again.

The sooner you get started, the better result you'll have. We specialize in custom-created balloon décor, but we also have a balloon menu to choose from if you're short on time.

When ordering custom balloon décor, we will look at your event area and determine what types of decor will provide you with the most significant impact for your budget, exchange quite a few ideas, and, if you wish, look through sample colors. We will provide you with at least one proposal, contract, and payment schedule. This method takes more planning, and we prefer to begin at least six (6) weeks out from your event. It is possible to plan in a shorter period, but there are risks involved in not being able to obtain the materials you want.

Once you've decided on your balloon décor, we want to order the materials. Often the newest colors will sell out at the same time. We want to make sure you get the materials of your choice. Two Big DIY Balloon Garland Kit Tips

... What's the catch?

You've probably seen these pictures advertising the kits to make the balloon garland in the photos. The picture looks great, and the price is very low, especially compared to a professional balloon decorator.

I never paid much attention to them, but recently they've popped up in some of my closed balloon decorator's Facebook groups I'm a member of. Usually, the conversations start like this, "They're using my work in their photo..." The trail of comments oscillates between the misuse of the photo, the quality of the balloons sold, and how surprised the buyer will be with the amount of time the kit assembly will take. I see a post like this about once every two weeks.

This morning while dicing the onions, chopping the mushrooms, and scrambling my eggs, I came across a YouTube video, "Expectation VS Reality Balloon Garland" by Anastasia Onishchenko. Anastasia does an excellent non-bias review of a DIY balloon garland kit purchased from Amazon. She doesn't go into the details about the differences between DIY techniques and professional techniques. She assembles the kit precisely as the kit manufacturer suggests.

Anastasia discusses the amount, color, and quality of the balloons in the kit. She shows you how the kit's manufacturer directs the assembly using a plastic strip with holes and glue dots. I found her patients with this method quite admirable, as these are DIY methods. While she doesn't come right out and say how long it took, she does mention the early morning hour she went to bed; this 'should' be a tipoff indicating the amount of time it took for the assembly.

The other variable Anastasia doesn't mention is her experience with balloon decorating. She is not a person that just picked up a balloon and an inflator but a professional balloon decorator. Unfortunately, the novice balloon decorator will encounter pitfalls that Anastasia has overcome by experience.

The big two takeaway tips before you purchase that DIY balloon garland kit. First, understand you might not be looking at the manufactures photo but some other balloon designer's image. Secondly, it is well worth 20 minutes to watch Anastasia's video.
